Age 68
Northport Funeral & Cremation Service announces with deepest sympathy the passing of Mrs. Barbara Self of Duncanville, AL on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Barbara Lynn Faulkner Self of Duncanville died on March 28 after complications from surgery. Barbara was born in Blount County, Alabama on January 10, 1947. She grew up there and graduated from Cleveland High School. Barbara met and married her husband, Lynn Self, in 1967, and together they had two children. When the family moved to Tuscaloosa in 1972, Barbara began her career with the University of Alabama. She worked for Capstone Medical Center in the business office, beginning as a records clerk and working her way up to business office manager. She left this position and spent some time on the road as a long-haul truck driver, co-driving with her husband. Together they saw the country. along with Canada and Mexico--and had many tales to tell about their travels. Her CB radio handle, "Coppertop" reflected her beautiful auburn hair. After a couple of years on the road, Barbara returned to work at the University of Alabama, working in the College of Student Media, and retired from there. She loved working there, especially with the students, who called her "Ms. B" and loved her back. Barbara also had a passion for gardening, though, to her dismay, the squirrels, chipmunks and deer often had a passion for the fruits of her labors. She studied horticulture at Shelton State Technical College, and spent a lot of time growing flowers and vegetables. She also loved her 1972 Monte Carlo, which she bought and had restored completely in 1989 and suffered the price of a cool, vintage ride: a couple of Alabama summers without air conditioning. Barbara was a wonderful cook and a die-hard fan of crime shows on TV, often expressing a wish that she'd gone into a career in forensics. But most of all, Barbara loved her family. She supported them unconditionally, and was greatly loved in return by not only them, but also by the many friends she made over the years. She is survived by her father, Howard "Red" Faulkner, husband, Lynn Self, children, Donna (James) Smith and Jeanne (Kelly) Jones; her grandsons, Gabriel Rosser, Devin Self and Jacob Smith, her brothers, Rick (Belinda) Faulkner, Randy Faulkner and Wayne (Cindy) Faulkner, sister-in-law Jeanne Shirley, and many beloved nieces and nephews, who are so sad to say goodbye to such a bright and beautiful person. Her love and light will be carried in the hearts of so many people for years and years to come. The family would like to thank a special nurse, Victoria Junkin, for her loving care of Barbara and all of us. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at the Cypress Inn Pavilion on Thursday, April 2, 2015. The family will receive friends beginning at 6p.m., and a service will begin at 7:15p.m. Everyone is invited to share a memory at the service. Flowers can be delivered Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 3p.m. to 5p.m. at the Cypress Inn Pavilion. Dignified and professional service entrusted to Northport Funeral & Cremation Service.
