Northport Funeral & Cremation Service announces with deepest sympathy the passing of Mr. William F. Simpson of Tuscaloosa, AL on Saturday June 7, 2014 at Hospice of West Alabama.Dr. Simpson is survived by his wife, Janis K. Simpson; his daughter, Ann Simpson Crosby (Sam); his son, W. Ford Simpson, Jr., M.D. (Judy); grandchildren Elizabeth Cason Crosby Cheely (Daniel), Samuel N. Crosby, Jr., M.D. (Amy), Caroline Simpson Poellnitz (Withers), and Holly Ford Simpson; and seven great-grandchildren. Dr. Simpson was born in Florence, Alabama on April 8, 1922. He attended Vanderbilt University. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1947 and from Harvard Medical School in 1951. He was a communications officer in the in World War II. He saw service aboard an LST 399 in the Mariannas, in Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Dr. Simpson practiced thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Tuscaloosa for 29 years and was on the faculty at the Medical College of Alabama (later UAB) and the College of Community Health Sciences in the division of surgery. He served as Chief of Surgery at DCH and as a consultant at Hale Memorial, Bryce, and the Veterans Administration Hospitals. He was prominent in planning and implementing the cardiovascular surgical program at DCH, which began in 1979. He was also active in his church and community. The family would like to express deepest appreciation to Dr. George Miller, Dr. John Miller, Latrelle Bell, and the entire staff at Hospice of West Alabama, with special thanks to Julie Aldridge, Yvonne Dillard, Renee Tyra's team, Brenda Kinard, Bernice Hewitt and Ron Wilson; Gene and Jenelle Marsh; Kathy Hayes; special friend and caregiver Connie Prince; and friends and neighbors of Signal Hill Circle. A private memorial service was held in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa on June 8, 2014.
